Buzz Aldrin -- famed moon walker -- and wife divorce after 23 years

Famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin -- the second man to walk on the moon, in 1969 -- likely realized that scores of media articles chronicling his recent divorce would lead off with witticisms and word plays about hard landings, likely not being over the moon concerning the details of his high-asset divorce and so forth.

We spare readers from tongue-in-cheek alliterations and other humorous attempts in passing along the news details of the recent marital dissolution between Aldrin and his wife of 23 years, Lois Driggs Cannon.

Although Aldrin filed for divorce in 2011, citing irreconcilable differences, the divorce was not finalized until late last month. Aldrin was married on two previous occasions.

Media talk has quickly turned to the property division aspects of the divorce agreement, with multiple reports indicating that Cannon is receiving half, or close to half, of Aldrin's assets.

Those, unsurprisingly, are substantial, but far from eye popping for a celebrity couple's dissolution. The New York Daily News reports that Cannon will receive half of a bank account containing $475,000, as well as $9,500 spousal support (alimony) going forward. Other sources state that she will also receive 30 percent of Aldrin's annual income, which has been estimated to be about $600,000. Child custody and support were not issues in the divorce, since the couple never had children.

The Aldrin divorce is just the latest in a string of long-tenured celebrity marriages ending in so-called "gray divorce." Those include the divorces of Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman after 30 years, Al and Tipper Gore (40 years) and the divorce of Morgan Freeman and Myrna Colley Lee after 24 years.
