LA Times: Divorce settlement finally reached in McCourt case

It is certainly difficult for a divorce blog to deny Frank and Jamie McCourt an occasional entry. We have kept readers abreast of the volatile and complicated high-asset divorce case of the high-flung couple in prior blog posts. That has seemed appropriate for what has been described in various media sources as "the costliest divorce in California history."

Indeed, the McCourt's Los Angeles divorce battle surrenders nothing in terms of action and intrigue to any movie script. It features ownership of a professional baseball team; muddled contracts that, when presented to a judge, said precisely the opposite things regarding team ownership; a testy stare-down between Frank McCourt and a baseball commissioner who wants him out of baseball; and money figures related to personal assets and properties that are, frankly, stunning.

Just as an example, the McCourt's owned adjacent oceanfront properties in Malibu. They also owned side-by-side homes in Beverly Hills and additional properties in more than a handful of other states. Together, they made many millions of dollars a year and took global trips in a private jet.

Tales of that lavishness seem about to end, with insiders now telling the Los Angeles Times that a divorce settlement has been reached. Pursuant to that agreement, Jamie McCourt will apparently receive $130 million from Frank and relinquish all ownership claims to the Los Angeles Dodgers. That latter point has been hotly disputed throughout the lengthy court proceedings.

It would simply be too wordy to convey all the material details of the divorce matter and settlement here. Readers who want to know more, though, probably have no reason to despair. It seems entirely likely that a legion of writers is already working on a movie script.

Divorces shouldn't be long and carried out slowly. Both parties usually want a clean break and a chance to move on from the hurt and anger. My attorney helped keep the situation professional and helped take care of important issues such as custody arrangements, assets and debt responsibilities.
