Divorce for mature couples: Is divorce right for you?

Last updated on April 8, 2021

For seasoned, mature couples who are having challenges in their marriages, the question is often asked whether divorce is the right decision. Late-life divorce, (sometimes called “gray divorce”), is a more difficult decision to come to than most people think.

Although it seems like having your kids grown up and your finances in order, it would be the simplest time of your life to get a divorce, but this appearance can be deceiving. It is important to know what to look for, so you can make a smart decision.

Some Questions to Ask

  • Are your finances really in order? Many people nearing retirement age have their finances well in order, but remember: your finances will take a hit during divorce. You should have a significant financial cushion before entering the divorce process.
  • Is divorce really what you want? Many people have challenges in their relationships and want to get divorced sometimes. Just make sure you take time to think with a clear mind to make sure it’s really what you want.
  • What would the impact be on your family? It is easy to downplay the impact your divorce would have, since your children are probably no longer dependent on you and your spouse for constant care and support. But there will still be an impact on your children and grandchildren if you have them.
  • Are you able to forgive each other? Forgiveness among spouse is often an important determining factor. If you or your spouse are still able to say, “I forgive you” (and, of course, “I am sorry”), you might not want to move too quickly.
