Mediation might fit your divorce better than litigation

Emotions can run high in divorce. Difficult disputes over important matters such as the division of marital property, child custody and child support, alimony (also known as spousal support) and other issues can make feelings run even hotter.

In many cases, mediation provides an alternative to the traditional divorce process. Mediation is typically less antagonistic than litigation and can often be a cost-effective way of resolving emotionally charged disagreements.

As many people know, the Fulton County Alternative Dispute Resolution Office offers eight hours of free mediation services to couples going through divorce.

You and your spouse can sit down with a qualified mediator to discuss crucial issues and come to agreements on parenting plans, what to do with your house and other common sticking points in divorce. A mediator won’t choose sides and won’t give either party financial or legal advice, but will instead help you make informed decisions.

Mediation can help couples with few assets and no children get to satisfactory agreements, as well as helping those with more complex issues to resolve, including transfer of a retirement plan, stocks, real estate or a family business. The alternative dispute resolution process can also help couples work out a child custody plan that both parties can agree on.

Mediation is also often less expensive and time-consuming than going to court.

Mediation isn’t for everyone. Some people require the help of an experienced attorney skilled in litigation.

If the benefits of mediation are appealing, contact The Siemon Law Firm to schedule a consultation.
