It’s hard to note what Dr. Frasier Crane, noted radio psychiatrist, would think of a couple’s lingering sniping and acrimony nearly two years following their divorce.
Then, again, Crane is a fictional character played by actor Kelsey Grammer, the real-time participant in the continuing drama that plays out with his former partner, Camille.
The couple married in 1997, after Grammer had already become a rising entertainment star. Notably, they did not execute a prenuptial agreement. Moreover, they were wed in California, a state that is among a distinct minority of others that disposes of assets created during a marriage in accordance with community property laws.
That means, generally, that all property acquired during a marriage consummated in California is split 50/50 between a couple. The relevant law in Georgia and many other states contrasts to that. In Georgia, the law provides for an equitable distribution of property, which might — or might not — result in such a division.
Grammer and his former spouse have reportedly just reached a settlement agreement that provides for final disposition of their considerable assets and all matters related to child custody of their two children, an 11-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.
Asset division was a particularly complex battle, with the couple having an estimated $60 million in assets, which included several multimillion-dollar homes.
In a recent interview with Anderson Cooper, Camille told her host that Grammer refuses to communicate with her except through his representatives.
As for Grammer, he told Oprah Winfrey that “it is impossible for us to pretend [in front of the couple’s children] that we can be civil.”
